Dane is out of Prison!

Dear friends,

Dane is out of prison and back in the US! He took a non-cooperating plea, was sentenced to one day and about $1,500 in restitution. We will be posting a statement about his case in the coming month, more or less. Thank you all so much for your support during this time.

Please remember that there are still 4 other people who need support to deal with G20 extradition charges and consider donating funds or putting together an anti-repression event in your city if you are able.

Respect, love, resistance

Sending Letters

Hey all,

We are still unable to provide a full update but one will be forthcoming when that is possible. Your continued support and interest in the case is appreciated.

Dane was eligible for Legal Aid in Canada so we have met the cost of Dane's legal fees at this time. Further donations will help him transition back into life when we get him home but that is not an urgent need.

Please consider reaching out to the other folks dealing with extradition (Joel Bitar) and state repression at this time.  Check out Jerry Koch's case at jerryresists.net or any of the many other political prisoners who need support Illustrated Guide to Political Prisoners and Prisoners of War

Regards, Respect and Solidarity

It is Dane's Birthday next Sunday!

So, hopefully Dane won't get mad that we told y'all but it is his birthday next Sunday. Yes, on 5/19 Dane will be turning 26.  Since we have no idea when he will be transferred into Canadian custody you can send birthday wishes to Florence, AZ.

(see side bar for the address and mailing instructions, please note CCA does not accept cakes in the mail, especially ones with files in them...)

Any ol' story or note will do, it doesn't have to be long- just so he knows how much we love him, and that we haven't forgotten. He did mention the last time I visited that he kind of wishes he never let on he likes "bad jokes." (What in world have you been sending him?)

Let's try to come up with some actually funny ones yeah?

Thanks for your continued support...

Dane Rossman to be Extradited to Canada

On the morning of April 17th, Federal Magistrate D. Thomas Ferraro ruled that Dane Rossman is to be extradited to Canada to face two charges stemming from the G20 protest in Toronto in 2010. The court ruled that there was probable cause to extradite based on several photos. As soon as the State Department certifies his extradition, Dane will be taken to Toronto in the custody of Canadian authorities.

Because of recent suicide attempts at the CCA facility where Dane is being held, his entire section has been on lockdown and he has not been allowed out of his cell for several days. He and his fellow inmates have been unable to call their friends and family, exercise outside, shower, or use the microwave. This absurd response by prison authorities is indicative of the collective punishment policies that define prison life. The fact that prison authorities have decided to respond to suicide attempts inside their facility by making life inside even more intolerable, ostensibly in order to help those incarcerated, is demonstrative of the evident truth that these institutions cannot ultimately be reformed but only dismantled.

Dane will remain incarcerated until his extradition and then will likely remain in jail in Canada. Please continue to support Dane as he continues his legal process by donating to his defense fund, and check back for more updates including how to write to him in Canada.

Dane Rossman Denied Bail After One Month of Detention

"They're trying to fly me to Canada and boy are my arms tired!"

Dane was denied bail yesterday after being detained for exactly one month. In front of a courtroom packed with Dane's Tucson friends and supporters, a Federal Magistrate ruled that Dane was a flight risk and refused to set bail conditions. Dane found the finding that he was a flight risk ironic given that he spends much of his time hollering about transience being the bane of North American anarchism. The Magistrate also refused to consider the various special circumstances surrounding Dane's detention and possible extradition, ruling that because Dane posed some flight risk, however small, these matters need not be considered.

Dane would like to send his personal thanks to all of his supporters who showed up for his hearing. He also wants people to know that the U.S. Marshals instructed him that he was not allowed to look at the crowd during his hearing.

Dane's extradition hearing is set for mid-April. Please check back for more updates, and please do consider donating funds or organizing a fundraiser in your area as the costs surrounding Dane's detention and legal process are expected to be quite high.

Early on the morning of Thursday, February 21st, U.S. Marshals arrested Dane Rossman at his home in Tucson, AZ on a provisional arrest warrant issued by the U.S. Attorney’s office, acting on a Canadian extradition request. Dane is one of five Americans sought in Canada for alleged offenses stemming from the G20 summit.

On June 26th and 27th, 2010, tens of thousands of individuals gathered in Toronto to protest the G20 summit. The G20 is a group of finance ministers and central bank governors from nineteen powerful countries plus the European Union. During the 2010 summit, Canadian authorities specifically targeted people involved in migrant justice, indigenous solidarity and anarchist organizing for prosecution. Dane was arrested along with over 1,100 other protesters in the largest mass arrest in Canada's history.  He was processed and released without charges. Now, three years later, he is facing three charges related to alleged property damage.

Dane is a dedicated social justice advocate, humanitarian aid volunteer, and student. He has spent the past several years in Arizona providing humanitarian relief on the US/Mexico border, and organizing against racist profiling laws and mass incarceration.

The extradition of an individual from the U.S. to Canada for property damage is almost unheard of. Dane's extradition is political in nature because it is meant to create fear and criminalize dissent. As long as global institutions exploit our communities for profit, people will cross nation-state boundaries to protest and make known the suffering in their home communities.

Dane is currently being held at the federal Corrections Corporation of America facility in Florence, AZ, a private prison where most of his fellow inmates are being held on immigration related "offenses". As Dane's supporters and friends, we extend solidarity to all those who face state repression, those in prison due to G20 protest charges, and those incarcerated for crossing nation-state boundaries. Dane has an extradition hearing set for April 16th, 2013.

Check back for further updates on his case and please consider donating to his legal defense fund.
